YouTube cards are interactive panels that pop up during a video, prompting viewers to take action. They can link to other videos, playlists, channels, polls, or approved websites. Cards can appear at any point in a video and are triggered by the creator, making them powerful tools for guiding viewer behavior during key moments.
YouTube cards are interactive information panels that appear as a small rectangular overlay in the upper right corner of a video during playback. When clicked or tapped, they expand to reveal additional content and clickable elements. Unlike end screens which only appear at the end of a video, cards can be placed at any point during playback, allowing creators to prompt viewer action at the most relevant moment.
YouTube offers five types of cards: Video cards link to specific videos or playlists (yours or others'), Channel cards promote another YouTube channel, Poll cards let viewers vote on a multiple-choice question, Link cards (available to YPP members) direct viewers to approved external websites, and Merchandise cards showcase products from your merchandise shelf.
Cards are particularly effective because they appear contextually — you can place a card at the exact moment you mention a related topic, product, or video. This contextual relevance makes viewers more likely to click because the card appears when the content is top of mind. For example, if you mention a previous video at the 3-minute mark, placing a card at that moment gives viewers an immediate way to watch it.
The small teaser text that appears before a card expands is crucial for performance. Compelling teaser text that creates curiosity or promises value significantly increases card click-through rates. Avoid generic text like "click here" — instead use specific, action-oriented language that tells viewers what they will get.
Cards also play a role in YouTube's algorithm by increasing session watch time. When a viewer clicks a card and watches another video, it extends their session on YouTube, which the algorithm views positively. This means cards benefit your channel both directly (through clicks) and indirectly (through algorithmic favor). Use TubeAnalytics to track card performance across your videos and identify which placement strategies and teaser text generate the most engagement.

A travel vlogger mentions a hotel review at the 4:30 mark of a city guide video. A card linking to the full hotel review appears at that exact moment. The contextual placement generates a 7% card CTR — three times higher than cards placed randomly throughout the video.
A tech channel uses poll cards to ask viewers which gadget they want reviewed next. The poll generates thousands of votes, boosts comment section activity, and provides direct audience research. Videos with poll cards show 15% higher engagement metrics than those without.
