The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) allows creators to monetize their content through ad revenue, channel memberships, Super Chat, and YouTube Premium. To join, you need 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million valid Shorts views in 90 days. Once accepted, you earn money from ads shown on your videos.
The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) is YouTube's monetization program that allows creators to earn revenue from their content. It provides access to multiple monetization features including advertising revenue, channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, YouTube Premium revenue, and merchandise shelf integration. YPP is the primary way creators earn money directly from YouTube.
To be eligible for YPP, creators must meet one of two paths. The traditional path requires 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months. The Shorts-focused path requires 1,000 subscribers and 10 million valid public Shorts views in the past 90 days. Both paths also require an active AdSense account, compliance with all YouTube monetization policies, and no active community guidelines strikes.
The application process begins in YouTube Studio under the Monetization tab. YouTube reviews your channel against its policies, which typically takes about one month. If approved, you gain access to the YouTube Partner Program dashboard where you can enable different monetization features. If rejected, YouTube provides specific reasons and you can reapply after addressing the issues.
YPP members earn money primarily through ad revenue. YouTube places ads on your videos and shares the revenue — creators receive 55% of ad revenue while YouTube keeps 45%. Additional revenue streams include channel memberships where subscribers pay a monthly fee for exclusive perks, Super Chat and Super Stickers during live streams, and a share of YouTube Premium subscription fees from Premium users who watch your content.
Maintaining YPP membership requires ongoing compliance with YouTube's monetization policies. Channels that receive community guidelines strikes, develop repeated copyright issues, or significantly deviate from their original content niche may lose monetization. Regularly review YouTube's monetization policies to ensure continued eligibility.

A comedy creator focused entirely on YouTube Shorts, posting daily 30–60 second skits. They reached 10 million Shorts views in two months while accumulating 2,000 subscribers. Using the Shorts-specific YPP path, they were approved and began earning from Shorts ad revenue sharing.
